Ingredients
  

For the Cake:

  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup 2 sticks unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup apple butter
  • 1 cup grated apples about 1-2 apples

For the Frosting:

  • 8 ounces cream cheese softened
  • ½ cup unsalted butter softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk optional

Instructions
 

Prepping the Batter

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease your 9×13 inch baking pan. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, spices, and salt. Set aside.
  • In another bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Add the apple butter and grated apples to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined. Don’t over mix!
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a smooth batter forms.

Baking the Cake

  • Pour the batter into your prepared baking pan and spread evenly. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Let the cake cool completely on a wire rack before frosting.

Making the Frosting

  • In a large bowl, cream together the softened cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add the powdered sugar and mix until incorporated. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • If the frosting is too thick, add milk one tablespoon at a time until you reach a desired spreading consistency.

Frosting and Serving

  • Once the cake is cool, spread the frosting evenly over the top. You can get fancy with piping tips or simply use a spatula for a rustic look.
