Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • loaf pan,
  • Oven
  • Cooling rack

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour plus extra for kneading
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water 110°F / 45°C
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil plus extra for greasing the bowl
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese grated
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder optional
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter for sautéing onion
  • 1 egg for egg wash – optional

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Onion

  • In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the chopped onion and cook for about 5–7 minutes until soft and lightly golden. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.

Step 2: Activate the Yeast

  • In a small bowl, mix the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the top. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.

Step 3: Make the Dough

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder (if using). Pour in the activated yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until a rough dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Step 4: Add Cheese and Onion

  • Flatten the dough slightly, then knead in the cooled sautéed onions and grated cheddar cheese until evenly distributed. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Step 5: Shape and Bake

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a loaf or place it into a greased loaf pan. Brush with beaten egg for a glossy crust (optional). Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped. Cool slightly before slicing.
