Equipment

  • 1 large mixing bowl
  • 1 whisk
  • 1 Spatula
  • 1 9-inch round or square cake pan
  • 1 oven
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Cooling rack (optional)

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder preferably Dutch-process
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients:

  • 1 cup plain yogurt use full-fat for extra richness
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs at room temperature
  • ½ cup vegetable oil or melted butter
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup hot water or milk to help achieve a moist texture
  • 4 ounces semisweet chocolate melted (for extra chocolate richness)

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven and Prepare the Pan

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

Step 2: Sift the Dry Ingredients

  • In a medium-sized bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Sifting helps ensure the cake batter is smooth and lump-free.

Step 3: Combine the Wet Ingredients

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the yogurt, sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract until well combined. The yogurt not only adds moisture but also provides a slight tanginess that enhances the chocolate flavor.

Step 4: Add the Oil and Melted Chocolate

  • Stir in the vegetable oil (or melted butter) and the melted chocolate. The chocolate adds richness to the cake and intensifies the flavor, making it a true chocolate lover’s treat.

Step 5: Mix Dry and Wet Ingredients

  • Gradually add the sifted dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, mixing gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix the batter, as this can result in a dense cake.

Step 6: Add Liquid

  • Slowly pour in the hot water or milk and stir until the batter is smooth and slightly runny. The addition of liquid makes the batter thinner, which helps the cake stay moist while baking.

Step 7: Bake the Cake

  • Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Keep an eye on the cake during the last few minutes of baking to prevent overbaking, which can dry out the cake.

Step 8: Cool the Cake

  • Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. This step is important to ensure the cake retains its moisture.

Step 9: Frosting (Optional)

  • If you want to add an extra layer of indulgence, frost the cake with your favorite chocolate frosting, whipped cream, or even a drizzle of ganache. You can also serve it with a dusting of powdered sugar for a simple finish.
