Equipment

  • 9×13 inch baking pan
  • Mixing bowls
  • Electric mixer
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Rubber spatula

Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 1 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 and 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

For the Frosting

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 3 and 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour your 9x13-inch baking pan.
  • Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, beat the eggs, then mix in the milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract.
  • Combine and Mix: Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until well combined. Carefully stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth.
  • Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before frosting.
  • Cream the Butter: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer until creamy.
  • Add Cocoa Powder: Gradually mix in the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, blending until well combined.
  • Add Cream and Vanilla: Mix in the heavy cream, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Beat until the frosting is smooth and spreadable.
  • Frost the Cake: Once the cake has cooled completely, spread the frosting evenly over the top and sides of the cake using a rubber spatula.

Notes

For an extra touch, you can add chocolate shavings or sprinkles on top of the frosting. To make the cake even richer, consider incorporating a layer of chocolate ganache between the cake layers or using a flavored liqueur in the cake batter for added depth.
