Ingredients
  

For the Cake Batter:

  • 1 cup 2 sticks unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 ounces cream cheese softened
  • 1 ¼ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour

For the Cream Cheese Layer:

  • 3 ounces cream cheese softened
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • ½ large egg room temperature
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C). Generously grease your cake pan and line the bottom with parchment paper for easy removal.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and cream cheese until light and fluffy. This will take about 3 minutes with an electric mixer.
  • Add the sugar gradually and continue beating until the mixture is light and airy.
  • Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined.
  • Slowly add the flour and mix on low speed until just incorporated. Be careful not to overmix!
  • In a separate bowl, using the same electric mixer (rinsed and dried if necessary), combine the softened cream cheese for the topping with the sugar. Beat until smooth and creamy.
  • Add the remaining ½ egg and vanilla extract, and mix until just combined.
  • Pour the cake batter into your prepared pan.
  • Dollop spoonfuls of the cream cheese topping mixture evenly over the cake batter, creating a swirled effect with a spatula. You can also use a piping bag for a more decorative design.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. The cake should be golden brown on the edges and the topping should be slightly set.

Notes

This recipe uses a smaller amount of cream cheese topping compared to some versions you might find online.
This creates a more balanced cake that allows the delicious vanilla flavor to shine through. However, feel free to adjust the amount of topping to your preference.
