Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Electric mixer or hand whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • 9×13 inch baking pan
  • Spatula
  • Cooling rack
  • Cake sticks or wooden skewers
  • Knife (to cut cake into sticks)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup 2 sticks unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup whole milk or buttermilk
  • 4 oz cream cheese softened

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan or line with parchment paper. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy (about 3-5 minutes) using an electric mixer or whisk.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Alternately add the dry ingredients and milk (or buttermilk) to the butter mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix just until combined—do not over mix.
  • Gently fold in the softened cream cheese, blending it lightly into the batter for a rich, creamy texture. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the cake to cool completely in the pan on a cooling rack. Once cooled, cut the cake into sticks or rectangular pieces.
  • Insert cake sticks or wooden skewers into each piece to create your dessert on-a-stick. Serve as is or dust with powdered sugar, drizzle with melted chocolate, or add a light glaze for extra sweetness.

Notes

The cream cheese adds moisture and richness, keeping the cake delightfully gooey without making it messy. For a fun twist, you can dip the sticks in melted chocolate or coat with crushed nuts or sprinkles.
