Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Electric mixer (optional)
  • 9×13 inch baking pan
  • Spoon or spatula
  • Saucepan (for frosting)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Cooling rack (optional)

Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix
  • 1 21 oz can cherry pie filling
  • 3 large eggs
  • 5 tablespoons butter melted
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 cup white sugar

For the Frosting:

  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 5 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 cup sugar

Instructions

Preheat Oven:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.

Prepare Cake Batter:

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, cherry pie filling, eggs, melted butter, almond extract, and sugar. Use an electric mixer on medium speed to blend until the mixture is smooth and fully combined, about 2-3 minutes.

Pour Batter into Pan:

  • Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading it evenly.

Bake:

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool the Cake:

  • Once the cake is done, remove it from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then, transfer it to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Prepare the Frosting:

  • While the cake is cooling, prepare the frosting. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter or margarine over medium heat. Add the chocolate chips, sugar, and milk, stirring continuously until smooth and the mixture begins to bubble. Let it simmer for 2-3 minutes before removing it from the heat.

Frost the Cake:

  • Once the cake has completely cooled, spread the frosting evenly over the top. Allow the frosting to set for a few minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

If you’re using frozen cherries, make sure to thaw and drain them thoroughly to prevent excess moisture in the cake batter. This will help keep your cake from becoming soggy.
